Lift Off
In Cornwall, there are many great events and things to do. One of the most popular annual events is the Lift Off festival. It’s a festival centered on anything and everything to do with hot air balloons.
Lift Off is held each year in Lamoureux Park in Cornwall, on the St. Lawrence River. This popular event takes place every summer, usually in July. It was started in 1994 and then in 1996 and 1997 Cornwall hosted the Canadian Hot Air Balloon Championships! This festival’s success and appeal have steadily grown and continues to grow since the very first event.
The event is filled with live bands every day and night for 4 days. Some past shows have included Tom Cochrane, April Wine, Loverboy, and many other great Canadian bands. A carnival or fair is also feathered with many great rides and fun for the whole family.
Cornwall Historic Jail
Do you have a soft spot for old, historical buildings and sites? Come to Cornwall for the tour of the historic Cornwall jail. The building is made of limestone, and was erected in 1833. Until 2002, it was in full operation. The jail is not restored, but in its original condition. Inside, you feel what it must have been like as inmates behind bars, or standing at the gallows.
Glengarry Highland Games
Just east of Cornwall is the home of the Glengarry Highland Games. This event takes place in July with band competitions as well as individual piping and drumming competitions. It’s hosted by the Pipers and Pipe Band Society of Ontario, and competitors must be members or have a membership with an equivalent organization from another province to compete.
Although these are only the tip of the iceberg, Cornwall Ontario is loaded with tons of other events and attractions.
